Loved, Redeemed, and Made His Own
A name can carry a story. Sometimes it reminds us of family, history, or the people who came before us. In Hosea, God used names to tell a much bigger story—a story of sin, judgment, redemption, and ultimately, love.
Hosea’s children were given difficult names: Jezreel, Lo-Ruhamah (“not loved”), and Lo-Ammi (“not my people”). These names reflected Israel’s rebellion against God and the consequences of turning away from Him. Israel had pursued other gods and broken its relationship with the Lord. Their identity had become marked by unfaithfulness.
But that is not where the story ends.
God promised, in Hosea 14:4 “I will heal their waywardness and love them freely.” What Israel could not repair through its own efforts, God would ultimately redeem. Hosea points forward to Jesus Christ, the One who came to buy back those who had wandered far from God.
That is the beauty of the gospel: God does not allow our past to have the final word over our identity.
Perhaps you have carried names that were never literally spoken over you but have felt true: failure, rejected, unworthy, forgotten, broken, or unwanted. Maybe your mistakes have convinced you that you are too far from God to belong to Him. But Jesus came for people who need redemption, not those who were holy already.
Through His death on the cross, Jesus bore the punishment for our sin. Through His resurrection, He defeated death and opened the way to new life. When we place our faith in Him, our identity changes. We are no longer defined by our failures or separated from God. We become His people, loved and redeemed through Christ.
So today, remember this: your worst chapter does not have to be your final identity. The world may attach labels to you, and you may even attach them to yourself, but Jesus offers a new name—a new identity as one who belongs to Him, a Christian.
You are not beyond redemption. You are not forgotten. In Christ, you can be loved freely, healed from your waywardness, and called His own.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank You for loving us when we were far from You. Help us trust to You with our failures, surrender our old identities, and receive the new identity You offer through Christ. Remind us each day that we are redeemed, loved, and welcomed as Your people. Amen.
