Have you ever felt God leading you toward something new, yet wondered, “How could He possibly use me?” Maybe you feel too inexperienced, too nervous, too ordinary, or simply unequipped. When we face a new direction in life, anxiety and uncertainty can make us question our identity, purpose, and ability to serve God. Moses and Jeremiah understood those feelings.
When God called Moses, Moses immediately focused on his limitations. He told the Lord that he was slow of speech and could not communicate well. Even after God promised to help him, Moses asked God to send someone else. Jeremiah responded similarly, reminding God that he was too young and did not know how to speak. Both men knew that God was calling them, yet they struggled to believe they were capable of fulfilling that calling.
Their response can sound surprisingly familiar. We may say, “I don't know enough. I'm not gifted enough. My past disqualifies me. Someone else could do this better.” We can become so focused on what we lack that we forget who has called us.
But God did not answer Moses and Jeremiah by telling them they were naturally gifted enough. He reminded them that He would be with them. God told Moses, “Now go; I will help you speak and will teach you what to say.” To Jeremiah, He promised, “Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you and will rescue you.”
That same promise reaches us today.
Jesus gave His followers the Great Commission: “Go and make disciples of all nations,” teaching others to follow everything He commanded. Then He gave the encouragement we need to obey: “Surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
Our calling is not based on having perfect confidence, perfect knowledge, or perfect abilities. It begins with knowing what God has asked us to do and trusting that He will help us as we obey.
You may feel like Moses: “I don't speak well.” You may feel like Jeremiah: “I'm too young.” Or perhaps you simply think, “I'm not the right person.” But God's response remains the same: I am with you and I will help you!
God does not ask us to serve Him because we are sufficient in ourselves. He calls us and equips us along the way. Moses grew into his calling. Jeremiah faithfully followed God despite his fears. We, too, can mature as we walk with God and take obedient steps of faith.
So don't allow insecurity to become an excuse for disobedience. You may not feel ready, but you can begin. You may not know everything, but you can learn. You may feel inadequate, but God is with you and He will help you and empower you as you follow him.
