Living With Wisdom: Truthfulness
Truthfulness is one of those values that sounds simple, but when we really think about it, it reaches into every part of our lives. We are called to be people who speak what is true, who are honest and open, and whose actions are consistent with the faith that we profess.
James 3:13 says, “Who is wise and understanding among you? Let them show it by their good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom.” Wisdom is not simply something we know. Wisdom is something we live.
That is why truthfulness is so important.
God says in Leviticus 19:11, “Do not lie. Do not deceive one another.” Exodus 20:16 tells us, “You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.” God is very clear about the importance of truth. Truthfulness is not simply a good moral characteristic; it is something God expects from His people.
But why does it matter so much?
Because truthfulness affects our relationship with God and our relationship with other people. Psalm 15 asks who may dwell in God's presence, and one of the answers is the person “who speaks the truth from their heart.” When we value truthfulness, we are seeking to live in alignment with the God who is truthful.
Truthfulness also builds trust.
When we continually say what is not true, people begin to question everything we say. But when we consistently speak the truth and live with integrity, people learn that they can trust us. Our words begin to carry weight because our lives support what we say.
Paul says in Ephesians 4:25, “Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to your neighbor, for we are all members of one body.”
As Christians, this matters because we have a greater truth to share. We know that salvation from sin and eternal life are found in Jesus Christ. Our lives should help people see that the truth we proclaim is something we actually believe and live.
So today, ask yourself: Are my words truthful? Are my actions consistent with my faith? Do I live the same way at home, at church, and wherever I go?
Let us value truthfulness. Let us speak the truth, live the truth, and allow God's truth to shape who we are.
Prayer:
Lord, help me to be truthful in my words, honest in my actions, and faithful in the way I live. Give me wisdom from heaven and help my life reflect the truth of Your Word. May others see Christ in me and learn that they can trust what I say. Amen.
